Dumbbell swing(-snatch) > rack > press: the old-sc Dumbbell swing(-snatch) > rack > press: the old-school way: an excerpt from my extensive research on traditional (and proper!) dumbbell lifting – my upcoming Hardstyle dumbbell lifting project.

Listen to the grandmaster of the Iron Game, W.A. Pullum, who held at the time 38 records (!):

"Standing with the feet astride the dumbbell, take a hold of the the bar with the hand close against the inside front disc, and "swing" the bell to arm's length... extend the disengaged arm sideways on a level with the shoulders. Then – after preliminary pause – lower the bell to the shoulder.

Note: When the bell is. at arm's length, the erect position can be taken without difficulty. Further more, it will be bound that the. Bell is 'received' better att he shoulder when it is lowered from above.

Resisting the tendency to bend to the side - or back - steadily press the bell upwards to arm's length overhead...

Note: if the bell 'sticks' half way, 'castingit backward will usually enable the arm to be locked without any deviation of the body from the erect position."

–W.A. Pullum, Weight-Lifting Made Easy and Interesting, 1926.

Cancel culture functions the same way cancer funct Cancel culture functions the same way cancer functions in the body, attacking fellow cells as it’s method of spreading. Instead of using its life energy to stand for something constructive, it spends its life energy trying to destroy others. It uses bullying as its method of operation while claiming to be virtuous. This is both emotionally violent and gas lighting.

Those in cancel culture get to feel a sense of purpose and significance through the power of hurting others. Those who allow themselves to be controlled by cancel culture are acting out of fear and choose to be weak rather than strong.

Those who are immune to cancel culture have courage and are unwaveringly aligned with a greater purpose than being influenced by bullies. Their psychological immune systems don’t let cancel culture in, the same way a healthy body’s immune system doesn’t let cancer in.

Bravery, strength, purpose, and common sense will help compost cancel culture into something better. And it’s happening.

In Zen, ensō (円相, "circular form") is a circl In Zen, ensō (円相, "circular form") is a circle that is hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create.

The ensō symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe, and mu (the void). It is characterised by a minimalism born of Japanese aesthetics.

Shinichi Maruyama, who lives in New York, takes a glass of water (or sometimes a mop or a big calligraphic brush) and with a swirl of his hand or his wrist or by some voodoo which he probably can’t explain, he is able to turn sheets of liquid molecules into Japanese calligraphy. He calls them "Kusho" or "writing in the sky."

This, for example, is ink in midair.

He has an image in his head and some instinct, some deep knowledge of water, time, muscle tells him how to move so that these shapes can form, then hang momentarily in the air until the pull of the planet drags them (gently when viewed in this high speed camera) back to Earth. Maruyama's work is most beautiful when his forms begin to fall apart.

You learn a lot from your teachers. Then you figure out the details by patient practice. And, almost always, you learn from your students. Qui docet, discit — who teaches, learns…

This is my case: every opportunity I have to teach, I learn. I am, above all, a student of strength.

I came up with the kettlebell “pull press” drill after watching magnificent press displays, dutifully accompanied by a grunt and power breathing, at the many kettlebell instructor certifications where I have had the honor to teach and assist.
